Get ready, it's another vintage Saturday!!!

It's time for another vintage Saturday. This actually is more like a vintage Wednesday, but I didn't have a chance to post then so I'll do it now.

I found a new hobby shop in OKC that has a lot of cool stuff. Mainly they have 15 card pages designed for the basic size minis that come in A&G etc. I was really happy to find a shop that has those pages since I've been too lazy to go online and order some.


They even threw in a mini that they were using as a display for the pages. Free stuff is good, even if it's something I'm not collecting.

If anybody is interested Amazon has 20 and 15 card pages available. I have no info on the 20 pages so you'll have to try those for yourself.



Here's my Joy of a Completed Page mini style. It's a pretty bad scan, but you get the idea. You don't know how happy I am to get these pages. So far I've bought around 76 of these pages and I'm still needing more. I bought the shop out the other day, so hopefully they'll get more in soon.

Enough of that. Let's get on with the "vintage". I've got real vintage and psuedo vintage to show off today. I picked up a couple of these Bowman packs. They're from 1989 . So not really vintage, but older stuff. I haven't seen packs of Bowman baseball so this'll be cool.

I grabbed these two packs off the top and I'm glad I did.




When I got home I noticed that one of the packs has what appears to be a Brooklyn Dodger. . .



... and the other a New York Giant/Met. I couldn't tell at first because of the packaging. I'll get to those later, but first a couple of cards of guys that I knew from when I was younger:



A Mattingly..


A Mike Schmidt.


...and a 75 year old Robin Yount.



This is a local sports talk radio guy, Jim Trabor. Pretty entertaining guy sometimes.

The two cards that I saw on the front were of:


a 1949 Gil Hodges and...


.... a 1951 Willie Mays. It looks like he's playing in front of a tarp with a barracks in the background. The older players really had to pay their dues in the old days it seems. Playing center field on the front lines must have been tough.

I now know where I saw these before. Baseball dad had sent me a Duke Snider card like this once in a trade.

They're pretty nice, but these cards are slightly oversized. There's even a mail in offer for Bowman pages on the back of these packs. I'm wondering if I should try to cut them down to size. That's probably too much trouble. Actually I'm wondering if I should even be looking at these cards. I pulled a lot of cool players, but it's frustrating not being able to store them properly. I like to put the cool cards in binders so that I can look at them better. The cards that don't fit into binders go into a "good box" that all contain cards in a toploader. These cards are too big for either. Crap!! I solved one problem with the mini card pages and now this.

Too much angst for me, let's get on with the true vintage.



A 1971 Dock Ellis card. This is the first '71 that I have in hand. The other is a card that I redeemed on the Topps website, but I haven't had sent to me yet. I think this card will go in oddball folder in between Sparky Lyle and Bake McBride. He he. Wink wink. It's actually in really great shape. I checked it a few times to make sure it isn't some sort of reprint and I think it's legit.

Anyway, that's about it for today. I have some more cool stuff coming up soon to celebrate my sort of one year anniversary so be on the look out for that.

Recientemente he recibido un paquete fresco de 2009, Allen y minis Ginter para mi colección de Chris en Nachos Grande . Él envió a lo largo de un borde negro y unos cuantos periódicos minis borde.

Allen and Ginter Minis for trade

I've been a busy ebay shopper these days and I picked up a few of my needs for the Allen and Ginter minis and the Turkey Reds subset I'm working on. I managed to pick up a few duplicates which I'm now going to share with you guys.



I'm lazy so here is a big scan of all of them.

I can't leave the post without showing off one of the minis that I want to keep.


I really love this black bordered mini a lot! I've pretty much got half the available parallels of the Van Gogh. I have a felling the no numbered back will be hard to get. I think the Bazooka back will be the next hardest with the A&G back the next to least hardest to pickup. I'm not sure if I'll ever get those cards, but the chase is what it's all about for this particular card.

Ginter box highlights

I finished up my first box of Allen and Ginter the other night and I wanted to share with everyone some of my high lights from the box.

But first I wanted to add a little music to this post. I had always liked this band in the mid to late '90's and I think it would be appropriate music for Allen and Ginter. I hope this link stays up for a while, I'd hate to have a broken link in my post.


It sort of makes me feel old to listen to this music. I really liked the Squirrel Nut Zippers at that time. I only had two of their CD's. I need to go out and buy some more of their music.


On with the Ginter!!


First of all I pulled another Van Gogh. This time a mini, which was cool. I wish I could have pulled a black bordered version. As it is I got a good Van Gogh box.


I got this really nice Kershaw card as well as this...


Matt Holliday card. I was looking forward to finally getting these two as I love the way they look when I saw everybody's scans of those two cards.


I love the horizontal cards. Most of them seem to be of action shots.


I actually pulled 4 relics. I was prepared to receive anywhere from 2-4 based on what I had read on the blogs.


The Donald Veal silk card is cool. It's my second silk card, the other being a Chase Utley. Actually all of these relic cards are cool in my book.


Most of the relic cards I have use different photos than the base card. With the exception of the Veal card.



I thought it was because they were all horizontal and that's why they used a vertical card for the relics and auto's, but I think it's because Veal is a rookie.



I was really happy to get the Jermaine Dye card.



His base card was one of the first cards I pulled out of my first ever pack of '09 Ginter.



Another card I was hoping to get was the Sitting Bull. I had pulled a couple of other wild west cards, and I really like the way he is captured in this card.




The only black bordered mini in the entire box, but it's a good one. I like the pose and the expression. (only 298 more black bordered minis to go!! Almost there.)


After ripping open the twenty four packs that only leaves me with about 106 more cards to go to finish the 1-350 card set.


I still need a lot more minis like the hoaxes and national heroes.



I'm left with a bunch of doubles. I've updated my want/trade list so if anybody needs any ginter I've got some to trade. The only thing I haven't updated yet is my mini needs and trade list. I know I have a national hero and maybe a few hoaxes, and mini base cards that are doubles.

I'm going to leave you with another song from the Squirrel Nut Zippers. This is a song off of their 1998 album Perennial Favorites titled "The Ghost of Stephen Foster". It's got really nice animation in the style of 20's and 30's cartoons complete with dancing mice and a Betty Boop-esque character patterned after the female singer from the band.

Gift from Collective Troll

I love it when I get mail. So nice to get a trade package from a fellow blogger. Marck from Collective Troll sent over some cards for my collection.



Something I didn't notice before is that there are also vertical lines in the brown part of the card. I'm guessing to look like a wood picket fence? Sort of like we are viewing DiMaggio through a knot hole. Kind of cool.






The photos for all these cards are the same, but look better than the Mickey Mantle Home Run insert from the 2006 topps cards.





These Home Run cards from 08 Heritage are a lot better looking. This was also from Collective Troll.

A nice Dick Perez sketch card from 2008 Heritage. He seems a little "sleepy" here.



My favorite 3rd baseman. Sounds like title for a TV show. I love the dejection of the Nationals player.


Cool diving shot!



My eye immediately found this card in the huge stack of cards that the Troll sent me. I love this design. It's a 1965 Topps design and I think it's an insert from '07 Heritage? I'm not really sure. I really like the pennant with the logo inside and the bright colors around the border.



My big chase is the black bordered minis from 09 Allen and Ginter. I'm still collecting the base set too. I've got a hobby box coming soon though. Hopefully that will get me a lot closer to finishing that set.



This is one of those cards where I can't tell if it's an actual game shot or just a pre-game warm up shot.



Another creepy little kid expression from A-rod. This time in mini format. Everytime I think of A-rod it's from the 2000 national championship game when OU played Florida State. He was on the sideline and he kept saying "Championchips" instead of championships. Like the world champion potato chip exhibition was being held in Pro Player stadium. The only reason why he was being interviewed was because as a Miami grad he thought that if FSU won that Miami U would get a piece of the national championship or in his case a bag of champion chips. Didn't happen. That was one of the few bowl games that we actually won.

Ginter mini madness

Like most collectors I have a fondness for the mini cards. They come in all sizes, but the "standard" mini card like the ones in A&G are my favorite, because I like the thinness of those cards.

I did notice however, that some of the cards aren't just cropped versions of the base set.

Here is a John Maine base and mini card from this years set.




This is pretty straight forward crop. He's facing the camera in a posed shot and the designers just centered him in both the base and mini versions.
Here is another example. Pretty straightforward.


Guy looks like he's standing in a forest fire. Look at the bright yellow light on his face. Put down the ball and grab a fire hose.

I don't have that many minis yet, but I'm assuming that most of them are like this.

This particular card is one that doesn't follow the centered crop theme.


It's the Bryan Berg card. You know the house of cards guy?

Anyway I noticed that in the mini you can actually see more of the scene surrounding Bryan than you can in the base card.



The mini is actually a better card for him because it shows more of why he's famous in the first place, which is the card building thing. It's like so much more nicer than his base card. The base card is basically just a creepy guy grinning at you.

The black bordered vertical cards are really interesting too.


I think this guy may have played last year in OKC for the Redhawks. The Redhawks are the AAA team for the Rangers. I'm too lazy to look it up though.

You can see here why the border seems to work better for a vertical shot.

In this closeup you can see that the border is composed of two parts. One is the main thick border around the outside of the card and the other is a little thin piece parallel to the thin one.



You can see that the figure is shown behind the frame, so it gives a little more depth to the card. It's not like just a black border. It's a black border with an extra dimension to it. Or at least it seems that way to me.



The black border for this subject is interesting because of the fact that he's blind. It seems to have a special meaning for the card than just a parallel gimic.


It seems to fit better than this regular bordered mini.

When this years A&G was released I had this misguided notion that I might actually try to collect the entire base set as well as the entire black bordered mini set. After buying a blaster and 20 loose packs I've only pulled maybe 5 black bordered minis. Maybe I can still put together a black bordered subset.
